چکیده

The hydraulic performance of structured packed columns is characterised by parameters such as loading point, flooding point, dry and wet pressure-drop. These parameters can be positively influenced by optimising the transition areas between two adjacent packing layers. Tests have been done in a two-phase test rig with a rectangular column made of perspex. The test medium is a liquid hydrocarbon in counterflow to saturated nitrogen gas. The performance of different packing structures at the layer-to-layer transition zone and the addition of vane-type elements between two packing layers was evaluated. Several packing modifications were tested and the results were compared with those of a non-modified packing. The intentions of this work are: • to rank the modifications of structured packings with respect to the achieved capacity increase • to determine whether flooding is initiated in the core of the corrugated packing or in the transition area in spite of the modifications made on the lower or top side of the packing sheets • to find out how the loading point is influenced by the modifications

CFD Simulation of Dry and Wet Pressure Drops and Flow Pattern in Catalytic Structured Packings

Type of packings and characteristics of their geometry can affect the flow behavior in the reactive distillation columns. KATAPAK SP is one the newest modular catalytic structured packings (MCSP) that has been used in the reactive distillation columns, recently. However, there is not any study on the hydrodynamics of this packing by using computational fluid dynamics. In the present work, a 3D ...

Separation Performance of Structured Packed Columns: a Comparison of Two Modelling Approaches

INTRODUCTION Structured packings of the corrugated sheet type have become increasingly popular for the application in distillation and absorption columns, due to their very good performance characteristics. Commonly, at suband near-atmospheric pressures, structured packings outperform random packings and trays in capacity and/or separation efficiency (see, e.g., Kurtz et al., 1991; Brunazzi, E....

How to Surpass Conventional and High Capacity Structured Packings with Raschig Super-pak

Raschig Super-Pak is a novel development in structured packing product technology that is fundamentally different to the well known corrugated perforated or nonperforated, textured sheet metal structured packings. It comprises of a systematic sequence of smooth sinusoidal waves above and below the plain of the metal sheet. Total reflux distillation tests with Raschig Super-Pak 300 were conducte...

A Study of Effects of Different Surface Modifications of MWCNTs on their Adsorption Capacity of Benzene and Toluene

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) surfaces were serially modified by the annealing treatment under Helium flow at 1000oC, the nitric acid treatment and again the annealing treatment under same conditions and their maximum adsorption capacities for benzene and toluene were measured and analyzed. The unmodified and modified MWCNTs werecharacterized by Fourier Tr...

Distillation Columns with Structured Packings in the next Decade

The analysis of the history of structured packings allows the conclusion that the innovation cycle will become faster. Based on the separation power as an alternative way to represent the performance characteristics an estimate of the next level of what might be the ultimative separation power is given. Regarding the column internals like distributors only slight improvements are expected, typi...
